Our team of Paul Bridgman (4) John Skuse (4) Judith Hand (5) and Bob Jones (5) entertained a strong Leighton Linslade side of John Thorp (1) David Ball (2) John Cundell (3) and Ross Bagni (3) on Friday 1st July in a Level Play league fixture. Chelmsford got off to a flier by winning both the opening doubles encounters 7-6 and 7-5 and more success was to follow as we led by 8 games to 2 when lunch was taken. Our visitors fought back in the afternoon but 2 wins by Paul and Judith in the 3rd set of singles contests by the narrowest of margins enabled us to win by 10 games to 8. A really close match with 9 of the 18 games going to the 13th hoop and Chelmsford’s hoop count of 107 being only one more than that of our visitors. Whilst this was an allround team performance with everyone playing well mention must be made of Judith’s achievement in winning 3 of her 4 singles after a difficult 90 minute drive which meant she had no chance to practice before the start of the match. It was pleasing to have a number of supporters watching play throughout and thanks must go to all who helped with the catering and the setting up of the lawns for play.
